Next, smart class councils in higher secondary schools
KOZHIKODE: Students in higher secondary schools under the district panchayat are currently in the process of getting themselves familiarized with the parliamentary system of democracy under the smart campus scheme. While the training of over 150 students has already been completed, training for class leaders are underway.
Class level councils are the basic units of the smart campus scheme, with class leaders playing the role of chief ministers. Six to eight students from each class will also be elected as ministers to address issues such as health, hygiene, sports, culture and education. A secretary will also be elected to the council.
Class councils will meet every two weeks to discuss issues faced by the students, said K K Sivadasan, education coordinator of the district panchayat. Issues raised by students will be marked in the minutes and handed over to the school principal in a confidential file, he said.
Under the smart campus project, class councils have already been formed in 110 schools in the district.
"The councils have been operational in 130 high schools in the district for four years now. We have decided to expand the project to higher secondary schools after witnessing the enthusiasm of high school students in participating in the councils, said K K Sivadasan.
As part of the class councils, we conduct awareness classes about the rights and duties of students as well as the values they should ideally embody, said the education coordinator. Besides, students are also taught basics of democratic systems including the ability to elect representatives and the power to raise issues and participate in school activities.
Ministers from each class are responsible for following up on how the school authorities address their issues. Under the project, each school will have a teacher coordinator who will guide to the student chief ministers and ministers. Besides, handbooks on the duties and responsibilities of ministers and the functioning of class councils are also being distributed to the chief ministers of all class councils.
