BJP announces list of 67 candidates in Chhattisgarh
Raman Singh would seek re-election from Rajnandgaon against Congress nominee, Alka Mudliyar, widow of slain leader Uday Mudliyar.
RAIPUR: The BJP on October 20 announced a list of 67 candidates for the 90 Chhattisgarh assembly seats, while replacing nine sitting MLAs and retaining all the serving 12 ministers in the present regime. Chief minister, Dr Raman Singh, would seek re-election from Rajnandgaon against Congress nominee, Alka Mudliyar, widow of slain leader Uday Mudliyar.

In the current list, while the party has given less than 10% representation to women, fielding only 6 of them, the youth have got the lion's share, cornering 34 seats. 22 faces have found a place in the list, which includes 23 STs, 9 SCs and 17 backward classes candidates.

Though Congress took the initial lead in releasing the names of 16 candidates for the 18 constituencies that go to polls in the first phase on November 11, the BJP has announced its party's nominees for all the seats. It has fielded 11 of the 15 sitting MLAs, including the chief minister and ministers Lata Usendi (Kondagaon (ST)), Kedar Kashyap (Narainpur (ST)) and Vikram Usendi (Antagarh (ST)).

The four sitting MLAs who have been denied tickets are, Ramji Bharti (Dongargarh), Brahmanand (Bhanupratapur), Sumitra Markole (Kanker) and Kheduram Sahu (Dongargaon). The party has replaced them with fresh faces, Sarojni Banjare, Satish Lathia, Sanjay Kadopi and Dinesh Gandhi respectively.

Of these 18 seats, the BJP had lost three in the last elections — Mohla-Manpur, Konta and Khujji — and it has fielded fresh faces, Bhojesh Shah, Dhaniram Barse and Vijay Sahu respectively.

In an apparent bid to counter Congress vice-president, Rahul Gandhi's attempt to woo the youth by promising a "young government" at the Centre, Chhattisgarh BJP has attempted to present a youthful team, giving nearly 50% of the announced seats to those who are less than 40 years old.

Other ministers who have found a place in the list include Brij Mohan Agarwal (Raipur south), Rajesh Munat (Raipur west), Chandra Shekhar Sahu (Abhanpur), Hemchand Yadav (Durg city), Amar Agarwal (Bilaspur), Nanki Ram Kanwar (Rampur) Ramvichar Netam (Ramanujganj), Punnulal Mohle (Mungeli) and Dayal Das Baghel (Navgarh).
